Okinawa based importer of wine, spirits and cigars

About the Founder – he is a veteran of the U.S. military who has worked professionally as a government contractor and federal employee. However, after studying international relations in grad school a few years prior, he became passionate about international trade and decided to pursue that passion full time. Blue Habu Trade Group was established in 2016, after dreaming of starting an import/export business “someday”.

Fast forward to 2019, tobacco import and sales was added to the portfolio, in which we focus on cigars. We play an active role among a group of young and talented influencers, in Okinawa as well as in Tokyo and other major cities. We are also a 5 star seller on Amazon Japan, the nation’s second largest e-commerce marketplace (first in monthly visits). Blue Habu selects high-quality products and provides an online shop, on site retail, and wholesale operations

Why “Blue Habu”? I hear this often so let me take a few minutes to explain where it comes from. ‘Habu’ is a term for a pit viper that is indigenous to the Ryukyu Islands. It is feared yet respected at the same time. The habu has a long history in Okinawa and is a staple of the local culture. There is even a “snake wine” known as habu-shu (aka habu sake) that is quite famous among tourists who visit the island. Thus “Blue Habu” is an identity that stuck out the most when deciding on a business name. Note that the character depicted in the logo is gripping a jar. This is actually a jar of awamori, which is known to be Japan’s oldest spirit. Like the habu, awamori is also indigenous to Okinawa.

Blue Habu is a catchy and recognizable title to all who are familiar with Okinawan culture. For those who are not as familiar, it is our goal to share some of the knowledge that we have gained while living here. It is indeed one of several reasons for creating this website and blog. Cheers!
